About

Pablo D. Gómez-Sandro
Pablo D. Gómez-Sandro is a composer and professor from Uruguay, South America. From 1990 to 2007, he was the founder, main teacher, and head of Instituto Musical Polimnia, a music school in the capital, Montevideo, and four other cities.
From an early age, he showed great charisma for teaching. His personal style and tireless dedication took him and his students to high success in electronic keyboard performance, unheard of at the time, crowned by wining in the 2nd and 3rd (last) national electronic keyboard contests carried out in Uruguay.
From 1999 to 2003, he obtained the various accreditations to teach keyboard performance and music theory courses, sponsored by Yamaha Music Foundation becoming one of the few Yamaha music instructors in the country.
In 2004, he participated in Organisimo, an International Festival and Competition on Yamaha Electone keyboards in Palencia (Spain), with him being the only Latin American contestant. Meanwhile, he studied the “Licenciatura en Composición,” a 7-year music composition program at Universidad de la República (Montevideo, Uruguay), which he completed in 2007. That same year, he emigrated to Shaker Heights, Ohio (United States), where he has resided since.
He continued with his studies, completing a Master of Music in Composition at Cleveland State University in 2010, where he studied under composers Andrew Rindfleish and Greg D’Alessio. For the next two years, he took a detour from music to study a Master of Arts in Spanish, which he completed in 2012. In 2013, he got accepted in the Ph.D. in Music Theory / Composition program at Kent State University, where he studied under composer Frank Wiley and theorist Richard Devore.
In November 2019, Pablo defended his doctoral dissertation, presenting the theoretical work “The Historical Development of Consonance/Dissonance and a Model for its Assessment” (link) and the 21-minute piece “Not Worth the Bullet that Kills Them” (for large ensemble). This composition (not yet premiered) includes the recitation of fragments of “Los nadies”, by the famous Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano (1940-2015), whose use was authorized by Mr. Galeano’s state.
From 2010 to 2020, Pablo taught at the college level in several universities in the Cleveland area. Inevitably, teaching several courses per semester left little time left to compose. When the pandemic hit, he saw it as an opportunity and felt that it was time to pivot. He quit all his teaching positions and opened a business in real estate investing, which freed the necessary time he craved to write more music.
Pablo’s early popular-music influences and his academic studies for 25 years have left a mark on his compositional style. He composes contemporary concert music (for solo instruments, ensembles of various kinds, or orchestra). He also writes music for plays, and different media. He leans towards instrumental abstract pieces, mostly orchestral, where texture and color are the main driving forces.

Who We Are
The confluence of an initial popular-music background with my academic studies in Uruguay and United States, plus my personal experience as an immigrant, have ultimately carved what I am, musically.
